That combination, along with not shying away from the deep and beautiful queerness of Calam, is the reason the show continues to exist. The way people responded to it, and to the show as a whole, made me realise, sort of like you Billie, that if this is the theatre we can make, then maybe there is a place for big queer weirdos.

I had the most incredible conversation with Gay and her phenomenally talented Calamity counterpart Billie Palin about the upcoming production: how the two of them approach bringing this hilarious, heartfelt, unabashedly queer story to the stage, and the way life is full of hope and circularity in the most surprising and unexpected ways.

Maybe there is not only a place, but an audience; a deeply enthusiastic audience. It felt invaluable in the world, like it asked everything of me, and I would go out and do these shows and feel like I left everything on the floor. V: Oh, a monopoly.

This is the show which felt authentically like a unique take on an old work. Days after putting this out to the universe, she got the call.

The First Gay Anthem

When we turn our heads, Billie Palin and I, when we turn our heads in synchronised forms, it changes the tides. Can you imagine Billie Valentine and Virginia Gay? B: And Calamity JaneI am so excited for this show.

V: Billie Valentine, what a phenomenal name. But really exciting. We have this thing, Billie Palin and I, and Richard Carroll clearly has a taste for magnetic female central performers which is focused around this jaw. B: It is! Ginny is crazy, and fabulous, and fantastic, and it was the power jaw.

We had people who had seen the show 16 times, every night right at the stage door, and this was for a little tiny indie show. The way my fingers danced over those typewriter keys… I remember it like it was yesterday. Calamity Jane, if only blemished by its too-straight ending, is an enduring picture whose impact endures.
